Guided by experts, understand how being a samurai transcends mastery of swords and martial arts; it is the way of life centered in culture, ceremony, and refined elegance that define this revered warrior class.

Day 1

Arrive at the luxurious Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo, where the city’s vibrant energy meets serene sophistication. Let The Luminaire design your evening, perhaps with a reservation at the renowned Tapas Molecular Bar. Here, Chef Kento Ushikubo crafts an unforgettable dining experience with artistic dishes that stimulate your senses and spark your imagination, setting the perfect tone for your journey.

Day 2 - Pottery, Music, and Samurai Heritage in Kagoshima

Depart Tokyo with a private transfer to Haneda Airport for a scenic flight to Kagoshima. Upon arrival, visit the historic Chin Jukan Kiln, a 400-year-old workshop famed for its Satsuma ware pottery. Meet Chin Jukan, the 15th-generation master, and learn about the samurai-inspired aesthetics of this intricate art form. Enjoy a nourishing medicinal lunch at Chin Jukan Saryo, nestled within the kiln’s serene grounds. Later, at Tamazato Garden, immerse yourself in Japanese culture with a performance by Yamashita Tsuyoshi, the leading Satsuma Biwa player. End your day with a seasonal, artful dinner at Umeya before retreating to Hogetsu, a modern residence blending contemporary luxury with samurai heritage.

Day 3 - The Art of Swordsmanship and Timeless Elegance

Start your day with a private tour of the Swordsmanship Museum, exploring the rich tradition of Japanese swordsmanship. At the Jigen-ryu Swordsmanship Dojo, engage in a unique training session and practise Buddhist meditation techniques. For lunch, savour Kagoshima’s culinary history at Sanei, a 90-year-old establishment led by a former imperial chef. Next, visit the grand Sengan-en, the historic home of the Shimadzu clan, surrounded by stunning gardens and heritage. Conclude your day at Wasure no Sato Gajoen, where natural hot-spring onsen baths and a farm-to-table dinner offer unmatched relaxation before settling into your peaceful riverside suite.

Day 4 - Mountains, Spirits, and the Beauty of Kirishima

Journey into the mountains of Kirishima for a rewarding hike up Mount Karakuni, offering breath-taking views of Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park. Pause for a traditional bento box lunch before visiting Takachiho-gawara, a sacred Shinto site of natural beauty. At the Manzen Distillery, enjoy a private tour and guided tasting of their renowned shochu, accompanied by an impressive art collection. Return to Wasure no Sato Gajoen for another delightful farm-inspired dinner and tranquil overnight stay.

Day 5 - Sacred Traditions and Farewell to Japan

Conclude your journey with a visit to the historic Kirishima Shrine, nestled in a forest and steeped in centuries of Shinto tradition. Witness a sacred ritual in the shrine’s inner sanctum led by the head priest, connecting you to the spiritual roots of samurai culture. After a satisfying lunch at Kirishima Jingu Station, transfer to Kagoshima Airport for your flight back to Tokyo. Reflect on your extraordinary journey as you decide whether to continue exploring Japan or head home.
