Sleep Tips

Establish a Bedtime Routine
Even while on the road going to bed and waking up at a similar time each day can help the body get into a healthy rhythm.

Practice Restorative Activities
Experiment with restorative evening activities to prepare the body for sleep. Try using one of our short meditations, breathing or yoga videos together with our Mandarin Oriental yoga mat designed with your health and wellness in mind.

Nutrition
Eat light evening meals and crowd out late-night snacking with yoga, journaling, reading, or connecting with a loved one. Digestion requires energy so if you consume a large meal at night, it interferes with the body’s ability to rest. Avoid late-night beverages. Ingesting liquids right before bed often leads to a night time bathroom run, which disturbs the sleep cycle and hinders sleep quality.

Switch on Airplane Mode
Turn off your phone or put it on airplane mode so you’re not woken by text messages and emails during the night.

Bathing to Relax
Enjoy moments of relaxation in a warm bath using a cup of our bathing salts designed to relax the muscles and help calm the body and mind before sleep.

Reduce “Busy Brain” At Night
Writing things down before bed can free your mind for a peaceful night’s rest. This can also be used if you wake in the middle of the night to clear thoughts from your mind and it’s useful for recording your dreams.

Choose the Right Pillows
The right pillow is so important for a good night’s rest. Select your ideal pillow from our pillow menu upon check in.

Adopt a Sleep Routine
Even while on the road try to establish a sleep routine for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Listen to your body when it’s tired and go to bed.

If travelling long distance here are a few simple tips for you to consider.

  • As soon as you get on the plane set your watch to your destination time then eat and sleep in accordance with this time frame.

  • If arriving in the daytime, try to take a brisk walk or run to improve your circulation from sitting too long. Also being out in the sunlight after a long flight will help you regain your vitamin D levels which has been known to improve your energy and mood instantly.
  • If arriving during the day try to stay up till early evening in order to sleep through the night

Eating Habits While Travelling (5:37 minute listen)

Eating healthy on the road can be challenging. Here are some tips to make it a bit easier.

Eating Well

While on the road eating habits can be disrupted. You may end up eating on the go, or late at night. Try these simple tips to stay healthy and well during your travel.

Eat Whole Food
Try to eat whole non-processed foods, such as: fresh fruits, vegetables, grass-fed, free-range meats, dairy, free range eggs, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Keep processed foods to a minimum.

Limit Refined Carbohydrates
Try to limit refined carbohydrates including: white rice and foods containing white flour such as pasta, pastries, and bread.

Keep Eating Times Consistent
Try to maintain consistent eating times and don’t skip meals in order to keep blood sugar stable. If you wait too long between meals or eat processed foods that cause blood sugar to spike, this will bring a crash in energy levels and means you are more likely to reach for foods high in sugar, fat, or caffeine.

Sensible Snacking
Travel with a choice of healthy snacks to boost energy and keep you full, such as soups, vegetable dips, energy bars, nuts and seeds. These will help you to avoid hunger pangs. Try wherever possible to avoid late night snacking.

Stay Hydrated
To keep the body hydrated and help digestion,  drink at least 2 litres of good quality water per day in addition to any tea or coffee.

Sensible Alcohol Intake
While travelling, try to keep alcohol consumption to a minimum particularly during the flight to avoid dehydration.

Juicing for Health
Vegetable juices are nutrition powerhouses, and while fruit juices are generally, an excellent source of vitamin C, they are high in naturally occurring sugars and should be drunk in moderation. Try a healthy vegetable juice for breakfast and give your nutrition a boost.

Tea and Coffee
Tea and coffee are both great drinks to enjoy in moderation.  Try to choose fresh leaf tea and organic coffee in order to get the best from your brew.
